The New York State Warm-up & Compete Format

For all State Championships the following Competition Format shall be followed. I believe this is the most efficient way to organize a competition and it provides the gymnasts with the best competitive environment while still maintaining the integrity of the championship.

Host Gym's General Procedures

bulletDoors Open for gymnasts, Coach's & Spectators 30 - 45 minutes prior to the designated Coaches Meeting time. Coaches must sign-in and display their USAG Professional Member Card. Competitive Gymnasts who are competing in the session go to the floor-exercise mat to stretch or if instructed get bar settings.
bulletAt the designated time a Coaches Meeting will be held for omissions, errors, scratches, changes and general competition information ex. seating, marching, etc.. The gymnasts continue to stretch on the floor exercise mat.
bulletAt the conclusion of the Coaches Meeting the gymnasts will line up in the designated area for their march in (opening ceremony)
bulletTimers, runners (if needed), score flashers and computer personnel must fully understand their job responsibilities for warm-up and competition. Adult timers are recommended.
bulletONLY Professional USAG Members are allowed on the competition floor and ONLY the athletes competing in the session are allowed on the competitive field of play. ALL Non- USAG Professional Members and NON-Competing Gymnasts MUST be off the competitive floor.

Note: Explain the "Opening Ceremony Procedure" to the Coaches and your staff who are responsible for this task. If you have enough staff,  designate Squad Leaders whose responsibility it will be to line-up the gymnasts and march them to their competitive events throughout the competition. If we can teach the gymnasts and Coaches this basic protocol, State Championship Events will be that much better. The Opening Ceremony must include our country's National Anthem.

"End of competition", have the Squad Leaders bring the gymnasts back to the Floor Exercise Mat and have the gymnasts sit down by Teams or Competition Squads in preparation of the Award Ceremony.

New York State Warm Up & Compete Format.
If your competitive squads have 9 or less for optional competition and 16 or less for compulsory competition a split touch is not needed. My recommendation: If one squad is doing a split touch (because of numbers) let the Coaches in the squads with less than 9 or 16 gymnasts have a choice. The New York State Format eliminates the touch, with the exception of Balance Beam.

Competition Line-up Local, Qualifying Considerations.

bulletGroup the gymnasts either by teams (without regard to age divisions) or by age divisions
bulletTeam Groupings for one session competitions that are one level.
bullet If there is more than one competitive level, the gymnasts must be grouped by level, but you can have different level's in the same session
bullet If you are running a competition and plan to give awards in each session then you can keep the teams together by competitive level.
bullet I recommend having a team start a competitive event (when possible) rather than an athlete. This will make it easier for the Coaches and gymnasts. It also allows them to take advantage of "blocked time".

Warm-up and Compete Format.
Vaulting.
Split or entire squad; each gymnast is allowed 2 warm-up vaults vaults for Compulsory Competition then compete and 3-4 vaults warm-up vaults for Optional Competition then compete. Note: Any gymnast having a problem may take an additional vault.

Uneven Bars. Split or entire squad; each gymnast is allowed 30-60 seconds for Compulsory Competition, 90  seconds for Optional Competition, bars settings are not included in the warm-up. The gymnasts warm-up and compete on the same set of bars. For competitions having two identical sets of Uneven Bars that are far enough away from each other,  you can have one team warm-up and compete on one set and as that team begins its competition, the next team begins its warm-up on the other set. When the judges finish the first team they will move to this second set of bars.

Balance Beam. Two sets of identical beams are needed. One will be designated the non-competitive beam and the other beam will be designated the competitive beam. Note: Both beams must be a safe distance away from each other. Gymnasts get a warm-up on the non-competitive beam of: 30-60 seconds for Compulsory Competition, 90 seconds for Optional Competition. Their appropriate time on the non competitive beam is in competition order, once the first 3 gymnasts complete there warm-up they proceed to the competition beam and going in competition order get a 30 second touch. Once these three gymnasts complete their touch they begin competition on the competitive beam, all other gymnasts will get their 30 second touch on the competitive beam while the Officials are scoring the previous gymnast. If you have only one competitive beam then you would follow the same procedure for Uneven Bars, using one beam to warm-up then compete. No touch would be necessary. For lower compulsory levels, instead of a touch you can use 3 skills and a dismount.

Floor Exercise. Split or entire squad; each gymnast is allowed 45 seconds for Compulsory Competition, 60 seconds for Optional Competition. I believe the time schedule stated for the New York State Format has always been more than sufficient since the gymnasts can tumble (touch) between the judges scoring. For split warm-ups the group that is actually competing first "touches" in-between the officials scoring. The second half does not warm-up during the first half groups time.
